Yesterday, the Philadelphia 76ers inked Ben Simmons to a 5-year $170 million deal. Is he worth this much? Yes and no. Yes, he can defend all 5 positions, he’s 6’9, has great court vision, and there’s not another player of his caliber available to Philly. No, his shooting woes continue to plague him, and we don’t know if he’ll ever improve. He’s one of four players that shoot under
30% when away from the rim. Simmons is a player who can play all 5 positions. In this past year’s playoffs, Philly moved him to the 4 because they knew he couldn’t shoot jumpers consistently. The Sixers have two options moving forward. GM Elton Brand must surround Simmons with shooters he can find in various situations. Otherwise, Simmons has to spend hours
in the gym working on his 3 point shot and getting more confident with it.
